about

This is an archival collection of instrumental pieces, primarily composed and played on guitar, and created between 1995 and 2010.

It represents a few pockets of time.

The ‘90s were years of transition. In October 1993 I left my first marriage, in which I had dismantled and essentially given up my nascent music production efforts. I moved from Burbank to an apartment in San Pedro, and slowly began reassembling my musical existence, first with a secondhand Tascam cassette Portastudio, then later with an Akai DMT-8 digital 8-track recorder. I spent many hours, often stoned, playing around with guitar sounds and textures. My only piece of FX gear was a little Zoom 9002, which I used for guitar, bass, drums, and even vocals. Drum parts were painstakingly programmed into an Akai HR-16 drum machine.

In November 1996 I attended a Guitar Craft Level 1 course in Argentina, which upended and transformed my musical practice. I did much work in the “New Standard” tuning used by Guitar Craft (CGDAEG), and found greater structure and clarity in my music.

In 1997 I moved to the San Francisco Bay area, and in 1998 the Bay Area Guitar circle formed around a group of Crafty guitarists. 1999 saw the beginning of a new relationship, which in 2001 became my second (and ultimately disastrous) marriage. In 2001 I also acquired my first digital music computer, a Win98se machine running Logic 3.0. Creating music on the computer entirely changed the production game.

The music on this album covers the span of time between 1995 and 2010.
